On Friday May 16, Turner Carroll Gallery (725 Canyon Road) continues to bring artists from around the world—or at least whose perspectives are wide-ranging to town. This exhibit, entitled New Gallery Artists to Watch - Asia, presents work by Wanxin Zhang, Hung Liu, Yoshiko Shimano and Youngmi Song.
Hung Liu’s pictures contrast classic Chinese imagery with often difficult subject matter and social commentary. The artist speaks of her point of view below:
“I have been painting in America since 1984, but Chinese history has always been the essence of my work. I grew up singing

In the midst of many openings this fortnight, a few painting shows stand out for their boldness and comprehension of the history and practice of painting:

The Nedra Matteucci Galleries, a sprawling Santa Fe art compound, is for sale for $13.5 million, signaling the end of an era for what was once an art magnet.
Matteucci has operated the business at 1075 Paseo de Peralta for 20 years. She will consolidate its contents with Morningstar Gallery at 513 Canyon Road, which she bought five years ago.
"It's getting harder and harder to fill the walls," she said. "It's something I've been planning for a long time."
Matteucci said the shaky economy had nothing to do with the decision to sell. She said she wanted to scale down now that her husband,...

Call the babysitter, bring in the cat, fill up the old wreck, and head down I-25 to a strip mall near the corner of Alameda and Coors Road to catch the fiercely comic, surprisingly poignant, and undeniably affecting solo performance of Taos native David Garver in Eric Bogosian’s take on “a crazy out there” America on the cusp of the Twenty-First Century— Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (1999)—at Greg Sorano’s The Studios (10131 Coors Road, Albuquerque), a newly designed and created black box performance space, on May 2 & 3, 2008.
David Garver does more than just bring to life a cast of fourteen...

The season is warming up literally and figuratively in Santa Fe’s art galleries. Starting in mid-April people hit the streets in anticipation of fun parties, big crowds and art for a variety of tastes.
The late Elmer Schooley painted painstaking pointillist landscapes that allow the viewer to fall into their lush and often edge-to-edge reality. On Friday, April 18, Meyer East Gallery 225 Canyon Road, (5-7pm) opens an exhibition of Schooley’s work, aptly titled A New Mexico Legend. “Skinny” Schooley layered tiny dots of intense color over large canvases that appear to scintillate and...

Galen Hutchison has always been a “cheeky” kid. In fact, in his one-day movie shoot on the set of Beerfest (2006), filmed at a private home in Northeast Albuquerque, he is referred to on the call sheet as “the wise-ass party goer.” This boundless energy and confidence led him to leading roles in high school productions as widely divergent as A Christmas Carol, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream and to a comic turn as Launcelot Gobbo in The Arden Players’ production of The Merchant of Venice. Yet, while he thoroughly enjoys acting and jobs “keep chasing me down,”...

On Thursday February 21, 2008, at the University of New Mexico’s Popejoy Hall, The Acting Company performed what may not be the definitive production of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. However, while not a theatrical experience for the ages, this interpretation of Shakespeare’s final play is a lucid, inventive, extremely well-acted, witty, and, finally, poignant experience for today. It speaks especially well to those audience members new to Shakespeare and is updated to appeal to contemporary youth. It is proof positive that the national initiative, “Shakespeare for a New Generation,”...
