PRIDE—You've got to want it to have it...because no one can give it to you.
It comes from a place within, although felt amongst thousands...witnessed by millions. On a collective level pride can move mountains. In June, the concept is celebrated around the world. Take for instance this weekend, two favorite cities on planet earth, New York and Santa Fe share the same official pride weekend. This is both touching, and a royal pain because I've yet to be in both at the same time. The feeling, however, is definitely shared.

Choosing repertoire for unaccompanied choral concerts is challenging for Simon Carrington, professor of choral conducting at Yale University. “I am usually pleased with my final choices, but (it) can take many hours to find the right balance of repertoire,” he said via e-mail from France. “I was therefore delighted to receive this invitation from the Desert Chorale to conduct their ‘Glorious Voices’ program, for which the entire repertoire had already been chosen.”
“Glorious Voices, Sacred Spaces” is the opening concert of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale’s Summer Festival 2008 and takes place...

In showbiz biographies, it’s always the challenging early years that sound like the most fun. After stardom, it’s just recitations of “and then I wrote ” …
A quartet of Santa Fe teens that calls itself Lydian Gray is in those beginning stages now — and they are, predictably, facing a lot of challenges. And having a lot of fun.
Lydian Gray celebrates the release of its first, self-titled CD at a release party Wednesday at Chinese Underground (which doubles at the lead vocalist’s home). Directions can be obtained by contacting the band through its Web site,...

As an 8-year-old boy growing up in Alabama, Patterson Hood did things that most kids that age don’t, such as writing songs and paying attention to politics — though he wasn’t always rewarded for being ahead of the curve.
“In third grade we were told to write a paper on Watergate,” recalled the Drive-By Truckers songwriter during a recent phone interview. “Most kids thought it was about Wilson Dam (in northern Alabama). I would say, ‘No, no. It’s about Nixon and breaking into Democratic Party headquarters …

Rehearse before a concert? Not Giacomo Gates, who will sing jazz vocals with the ensemble Straight Up at the opening performance of Music on the Hill at St. John’s College on tonight.
“We won’t work it out at all before the show,” Gates said by phone from his home in Connecticut. “I come with a list of a couple hundred tunes in my pocket. I have to see what’s happening with the bandstand, the venue and the crowd. The number of people in the audience, their ages and even the weather affect my song choices. I know we’ll do some George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Charlie Parker and...

In the secret lives of professional musicians, there are certain pieces they play on the concert stage that they like more than others. The program that Canadian-born pianist Marc-André Hamelin will perform Sunday in Los Alamos with the Los Alamos Concert Association is one of his favorites.
“I love this program,” he said by phone from his home in Boston. “I played it a couple of weeks ago in Moscow. There are two sonatas in the first half that are in the same key, but they couldn’t be more contrasting.”
Hamelin performs one of the sonatas featured on the Grammy-nominated two-disc set of...
