Tangents represents Stuart’s several-decade exploration into ideas about Nature, as well as the nature of materials. New works include abstract paintings in sumi ink and acrylic on mulberry paper. These can be seen as “chapters” of her scrolls (up to sixty feet in length) in which the entire abstract narrative is only suggested. Stuart manipulates paper to create patterned and perforated surfaces, reminiscent of Nature's patterns of parched earth or stars in the Milky Way.
