Since its inception, SITE Santa Fe has presented innovative and provocative art from around the world to our local and global community. Established in 1995 to organize an international biennial, the museum has presented over 65 exhibitions, including seven biennials, and works by over 450 international artists. SITE also offers ongoing educational and multidisciplinary programs and publishes an extensive series of catalogues that augment and interpret its exhibitions.
To most of the world, SITE Santa Fe, with its ambitious international contemporary art program, might seem incongruous here in the southern Rocky Mountains, like a tiny island unto itself. In fact, it is the tip of the iceberg, the most visible part of a large, informed, and formidable art community. Artists, collectors, writers, and scientists are all here, quietly doing extraordinary things, and we are here to serve you.
From its founding in the early 1990s, SITE Santa Fe has offered its visitors, and in particular the extensive and lively group of artists here in Santa Fe, access to global contemporary art of the highest caliber. SITE's founders chose to accomplish that goal not by building a static collection, but by ensuring that SITE would be in a constant state of reinventing itself through the mechanism of a biennial exhibition―the only international biennial in the United States. Every two years a new curator of international renown is invited to realize their vision with the help of SITE's dedicated staff and generous supporters.
The 2008 Biennial, Lance Fung’s Lucky Number Seven, opening June 22 and running through October 26, returns SITE to its roots, but in a new and reinvigorated way. Community, an international outlook, reinvention, and risk are hallmarks of SITE's and Fung's curatorial practice. Through his charismatic leadership, breadth of vision, and considerable charm, he and SITE have challenged each other to create something truly extraordinary. Join us in the process, the collaboration, and the fun that is Lucky Number Seven.
