Railyard Parks Q&A

How big is the parks project?

A total of 12 acres includes 10 acres of parkland bordered by Cerrillos Road, Guadalupe Street, and Paseo de Peralta, plus a walk-bike trail system and three additional parks behind the new Farmer’s Market building on Paseo de Peralta, including the Railyard Plaza and two small “pocket parks.”

Who is behind the parks project?

The Trust for Public Land (TPL) in conjunction with the City of Santa Fe. The contractor is Star Construction, Inc. of Albuquerque.

How did it all begin?

In 1995, TPL facilitated the City of Santa Fe’s purchase of the 50-acre Railyard area for the community. Use of the land was debated for many years until a design, including parkland, was ultimately chosen by the citizens of Santa Fe.

Where does the funding come from?

The Railyard Park and Plaza are the result of a public-private partnership that began with The Trust for Public Land and the City of Santa Fe and now includes other local, state and national partners. Many private donors have also helped, and donations are still needed to reach the goal of $13.5 million.

What is the vision for the parks?

The Railyard Park and Plaza are intended for the use and enjoyment of the entire Santa Fe community. To that end, the project includes spaces for play, rest, performances, gardening, strolling, exercising, and eating.

When do the parks open?

The scheduled finish date is September 1, 2008; a Grand Opening celebration will take place on the weekend of September 13 & 14.
