Public reception: Saturday August 9, 2–4pm
In his upcoming exhibition of new watercolors, Western Pictorials, William Matthews finds inspiration for his masterful watercolors in the landscapes, people, and culture of the North American West. His paintings, layered with washes on custom-made paper, capture the mysterious essential spirit of his subjects.
During the public reception for this show, the artist will be signing copies of his latest book, William Matthews: Working the West. Graced with an insightful essay by noted author Annie Proulx, Working the West presents a sumptuous collection of paintings displaying Matthews signature technique and epigrammatic imagery. Also prefaced and interspersed with Matthews’ own meditations, this book provides a fascinating look at the art and life of this rare and talented painter.
