Picasso once said, “Art is the elimination of the unnecessary.” We asked two artists to respond to his statement.

What gives a painter the right to decide what art is? Why do we give Picasso so much power? After all, he’s dead and so is the context in which he made this statement. I think that it is very important that we artists create our own rules or lack thereof. Kimberly Genevieve Hargrove
Someone probably asked him for a definition of art. Picasso liked word games. It’s fun to deconstruct his quote: Art is the creation of what is necessary. It is necessary to create art. Art is basic to our survival. Our bodies must have air every three minutes, sleep and water every two or three days and food every two or three weeks. How long can we live without art? Art is how our soul communicates. Thomas Cates
