When I was growing up in Santa Fe, and the town was half its current size, I remember my father telling me there were probably more dogs living here than people. The Great Outdoors:
Many, but not all city, state and federal hiking trails and camping sites, allow dogs. Check with the Parks Department or appropriate agencies. In addition to bringing enough water and food for your dog, a leash is required, as is cleaning up after your pooch. Here are a few favorites of the canine crowd.
Atalaya Trail
Trailhead is off Camino De Cruz Blanca (right before Wilderness Gate) or Saint John’s College parking lot. Look to spend a good hour with your pooch as you ascend up to the 9,100' summit. If you’re worried that the hike might be too rough for your canine, there are some easier trails on the way up. Great city views await you at the top.
Dale Ball Trail System
There are two access points: one at the north trailhead on NM 475 at Sierra del Norte, the other near the intersection of Cerro Gordo and Upper Canyon Road. Both are relatively easy, casual and close to town. Be aware that mountain bikers sometimes share the trail with you so keep an on your dog.
Borrega Trail
Next to the Winsor trailhead (Ski Basin area at around 10,000 feet), the trail begins with a descent which leads to a stroll through high-alpine forests. Perfect for kids as well as dogs.
Santa Fe Baldy
For the most fit dogs and owners, this full-day hike through the Santa Fe National Forest begins at Winsor Trail and takes you to Santa Fe’s highest summit—Baldy—in the Pecos Wilderness at 12,622 feet. (North Truchas Peak, in Rio Arriba County north of Santa Fe, bests it at 13,024 ft.)
Nambe Lake
After following the Santa Fe Baldy trail through a gate, you and your pooch will begin a long descent down. When you get to the bottom of the descent, take a right and begin up a steep hill. The hill will open out on a beautiful meadow. From the meadow you will begin a long, steep, ascent up the trail. Many dogs and owners turn back, but those who stick it out are rewarded with a breath-taking view of the lake at the top.
Lake Peak
It’s best if you and Fido start at the crack of dawn and ascend from the backside, where you follow the Santa Fe Baldy trail. Eventually the trail will take you to a fork in a huge meadow. Go right on the fork. The trail will lead you to the top of Lake Peak and some extraordinary views.
