Ezra Katz, a plein-air and studio impressionist painter, captures the essence of cityscapes, landscapes and figures with fluidity and abstraction, branding his pieces with a unique punch. Recognized in national publications, Katz notoriety has skyrocketed and collectors are taking notice.
A California artist, Katz is originally from Baja California Sur, Mexico. It was there that he first established himself as an artist and gained a presence in galleries and private collections. In the off seasons, Ezra traveled through the United States, painting commissions for private clients, including Michael Dell, of Dell computer in Austin, Texas; and Terry Shough of Agillion Computer Systems in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Early in his career in Cabo San Lucas, Katz established a following among restaurateurs and hoteliers for his highly original murals and etchings. Two especially distinctive restaurants featuring his work are Morgan’s and Tequila in San Jose Del Cabo.
Born in La Paz, BCS in 1970, Katz began studying art at the age of seven. Master painters of the San Carlos University of Arts and Humanities would come from Mexico City and stay for the summer at his family home. He began with academic art and later studied commercial art when he arrived at the University of Texas in Austin and Corpus Christi.
He met his wife, Stephanie, and moved to California where he began studying with Ken Auster, Jeremy Lipking and Peggy Kroll-Roberts. Within six months of his move he was picked up by three galleries and was elected an “Artist to Watch,” in Southwest Art Magazine. Six months thereafter he was the featured artist in “The Plein-Air Scene,” publication.
Ezra now spends his time between Mexico and California. He is fascinated with the sundry landscapes of the bay area and all of California. As a Plein Air and studio painter, the diversity provides him with a myriad of inspiration, allowing him to mark the canvas with his own impressionistic interpretation of the cities, country, and people he encounters.
