“Joe Hutchison’s paintings evoke a scene remembered rather than observed.”
The paintings of Joseph Hutchinson have evolved over his fifty-year career as an artist and teacher. Experiences in the landscape of places where he has lived, current political and social issues have shaped his paintings. He is consistent in working with oil or acrylic on canvas in abstract compositions with expressionistic overtones of vigorous brush strokes and color. Currently, he is exploring the contrasting geometry of the ancient cliff dwellings with the organic landscape of Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon and the Acoma Mesa with these painterly techniques.
Joe has exhibited his paintings in approximately a hundred major shows and has won numerous awards, including a purchase prize at the Denver Art Museum. His work is in many private and corporate collections in the U.S., and in Italy, England, Canada, Germany, and France.
A major influence on his art career was eight teaching semesters in Europe, six to Italy, one to England and one to France. He also received a 1995 travel grant to Italy to study and complete research for a pilot PBS video documentary entitled “Sanctuary”, a study of the role of art in architectural spaces.
