Health Care Debate Important for N.M.

Don't look now but the U.S. presidential election might figure into what, if anything, New Mexico's elected leaders do about universal health care this year.

Problem is, we can't help but look. I'll cite a couple of examples.

‘Owning’ Loyalty is Old-School Politics

So, did the Clintons own Bill Richardson going into the current presidential campaign season? James Carville apparently thinks so, and the uniquely colorful Democratic strategist unleashed some of his most biting rhetoric to make his point after Richardson gushed on national television about upstart Barack Obama.

Just as Jesus was betrayed by Judas, so, too, were the Clintons betrayed by Richardson, snarled Clinton pal Carville.

Hillary and Bill Clinton have so far taken the high road while publicly addressing Richardson's defection. Arguably, remaining civil while surely wishing they could...

Health Insurance Allowed My Family Hope, Dignity

COLUMN: Horace Mann, before his death in 1859, pressed hard for educational reforms and was credited with helping to establish our nation's elementary schools. He, or more accurately, work done in his name, might well have saved my little sister's life and preserved my father's sense of providing for his family under very trying times.

Nearly 50 years ago, my father drove my mother to the Española Hospital in their 1952 Pontiac for the birth of their fourth child. She came into the world with an imperfect heart and, beginning with her first breath, was a very sick child.
