Santa Fe Favorites: More Dinner on a Budget: Bar Food

Gosh, kids, it seems I’m not the only one in town who enjoys a night out but doesn’t want to empty my wallet. So let’s explore more ways to eat out in Santa Fe while spending less than $15 on food. This time, let’s try one of my favorite tricks, developed during my starving artist years in New York City: I call it “Drinks and Apps.” Many of Santa Fe’s fine restaurants have separate bar menus that offer lovely selections at a fraction of the prices in the main dining room. In the first installment of Dinner on a Budget I mentioned two such places: Del Charro, which actually only has a bar...

Santa Fe Favorites: Pilates

The popular fitness program known as Pilates was first developed during World War I by Joseph Pilates, who designed a series of exercises to help rehabilitate injured soldiers. These exercises emphasize strengthening the muscles of the abdomen, torso and thighs (the “core muscles”), as well as spinal alignment and breath awareness. Pilates is popular with both dancers and athletes, who benefit from the increased flexibility, strength and balance that Pilates can bring. Though Pilates lacks the spiritual aspect found in yoga, both practices use breath work to achieve a holistic approach to...

Santa Fe Favorites: Yoga

Yoga is an ancient set of practices first developed in India more than 5,000 years ago. Traditional yoga, whose philosophy involves integrating the body, mind and spirit to achieve harmony in life, involves breath work and meditation as well as physical exercises.

Increased flexibility is a major physical benefit of yoga, and the reason many people are drawn to it. But it doesn’t stop there. Practicing yoga brings increased strength, fitness and balance to the body. Other benefits can include relief from stress and a more peaceful mind. Though yoga is not a religion, traditional yoga is a...

Santa Fe Favorites: One Day in Santa Fe

If you have only one day to spend in Santa Fe, there’s no better place - really, no other place - to start than on the historic Plaza. The Plaza is the heart of Santa Fe; there’s more than enough to see, do, eat, buy - and otherwise experience - in the surrounding streets and neighborhoods to keep you happily busy all day. You won’t need your car - the downtown historic district is easily (and best) navigated on foot.

Want to start with breakfast? Try Tia Sophia on West San Francisco Street (have the huevos rancheros with Christmas chile). Another local favorite is Café Pasqual’s on the...

Santa Fe Favorites: Dinner on a Budget

Sure, you can spend a small fortune on dinner at Santa Fe’s justifiably famous high-end restaurants. And really, you should—at least once in a while. But for everyday eating out (well, maybe not every day, but you know what I mean), there are plenty of establishments that won’t put quite such a dent in your wallet. So let’s explore some local eateries where a meal can be had for under $15 per person. Drinks and extras (appetizers, desserts) may put you over at some restaurants, but you’ll still get good value for your dining dollars.

In addition to the restaurants listed below, check out...

Santa Fe Favorites: Bed & Breakfasts

Visitors to Santa Fe will find that choosing a place to stay is—even more than most destinations—all about location. Ideally, you’ll want to be able to walk to the plaza and other downtown historic areas, yet still get a big dose of New Mexico charm and a quiet night’s sleep. There’s no need to limit your choices to the pricy downtown hotels or the less expensive (but less convenient) motels that line Cerrillos Road. Santa Fe offers some beautiful Bed & Breakfast Inns on streets so quiet and secluded you’ll forget you’re in the heart of town. Best of all, staying in a B

Santa Fe Favorites: Lunch Under $10

Eating out in Santa Fe can be expensive, but you don’t have to break the bank to have a special lunch. Sure, we have our share of the usual fast food places. A few of the chains—say, Bumblebee’s and Bert’s Burger Bowl—serve good food at reasonable prices. But here in Santa Fe, local is the way to go. Whether you’re exploring the downtown Plaza area, are out and about, or heading out of town on a day trip, you’ll find some wonderful restaurants that feature a variety of entrées under $10.

Santa Fe Favorites: Lunch Over $10 (and worth it!)

Whether you’re on vacation or live here year-round, a special lunch at one of Santa Fe’s higher-end restaurants is a treat worth indulging in. Many of these celebrated eateries offer smaller (and less expensive) versions or their dinner entrées; others serve different dishes at lunch than at dinner. Either way, lunch is a great way to experience some of the City Different’s renowned restaurants at lower prices.

Abiquiú

Abiquiú, best known as the home of artist Georgia O’Keeffe, offers astonishing landscapes and a glimpse into New Mexico’s rich past.

Abiquiú, a small town about 50 miles northwest of Santa Fe, is best known today as the home of the artist Georgia O’Keeffe. Once you visit, you’ll understand why she loved and painted the landscape of her adopted home for so many years. The haunting beauty of the tiny adobe village, the majesty of the surrounding mountains, and the astonishing grandeur of the nearby red rock canyons is more than enough to keep any artist enthralled for a lifetime.
