The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) C-142min. D: Marc Webb. Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx. Continuation of Marvel’s reboot, with high-schooler Peter Parker battling a trio of villains, in the tradition of Superman II. A little longer than the first one, but a lot more fun. This $200,000,000 movie was shot entirely in New York. Comics legend Stan Lee cameos in the graduation scene. [PG-13]
Fading Gigolo (2014) C-90min. D: John Turturro. John Turturro, Woody Allen, Liev Schreiber, Sharon Stone, Sofia Vergara. A Brooklyn florist in financial straits unexpectedly finds a sideline gold mine as a middle-aged professional lothario with love for sale. You might have thought the role would be played by Woody Allen, in one of his very rare appearances in a film he didn’t also write and direct, but no…he’s the pimp! [R]
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013-England-Germany-France-US) C-90min. D: Jim Jarmusch. Tilda Swinton, Tim Hiddleston, Anton Yelchin, John Hurt. Two ageless bloodsuckers, deeply in love but also deeply bored, try to find a reason to keep on not living. Notable for its left-of-center direction, a lush look, and an attractive cast, in something of an indie take on The Hunger. And if you watch this as a party movie where everybody takes a shot whenever the word “vampire” is mentioned, you’ll all still be sober at the end. [R]
The Sacrament (2013) C-90min. D,Sc: Ti West. Joe Swanberg, Amy Seimetz. Part thriller, part horror movie, about a distraught man trying to retrieve his vanished sister from a mysterious commune, even as a news crew follows him surreptitiously. From the writer-director of The Innkeepers and House of the Dead, and produced by Eli Roth (Hostel), so now you know what to expect. Shot on location in Savannah GA. [R]
