All Aboard the Sky Railway Wine Experience - SantaFe.com

What do you get when you combine great wine with a train ride in the landscape beyond beautiful Santa Fe, New Mexico? A wine train of course!

Local Wines Meet Scenic Views

On the Sky Railway New Mexico Wine Train, you can relax and savor regional wines as you take in the stunning vistas of the New Mexico landscape. The New Mexico Wine Train leaves from the Santa Fe Depot at the Santa Fe Railyards, travels to Lamy, New Mexico, and returns to Santa Fe, taking you on a fun, two and a half to three-hour journey.

Every ticket provides access to a spot in one of their cozy, enclosed train coaches, a free glass of wine chosen from their menu, a hand-held charcuterie box, and live music. Extra refreshments, including tastings from nearby vineyards and other beverages, are available for purchase.

The Sky Railway Wine Train Experience

From the minute you step on board the Sky Railway New Mexico Wine Train at the Santa Fe Railyard, you know you’re in for a good time. You can just sit back and relax while enjoying the scenery, sipping local wines, and listening to live music. Your first glass of wine is included; after that you can sample what the nearby vineyards have to offer while you munch on the food that is part of the fun experience.

The entertainment provided by Santa Fe musicians brings the experience to a new level. It’s another way that Sky Railway shows its support for local businesses and members of the Santa Fe music scene. Live music on the wine train creates a festive atmosphere where passengers can unwind and enjoy the company of others and the scenery.

When you step off the train after your adventure has ended, you can seek out your new, favorite wines at nearby vineyards and perhaps find the on-board entertainers at their next local gig.

History of Sky Railway

Sky Railway was formed when several prominent Santa Feans, including George R. R. Martin, of A Game of Thrones fame, revived the defunct 141-year-old Santa Fe Southern railway. These local train enthusiasts turned Sky Railway into an adventure train for Santa Feans and visitors to the City Different. They engaged Santa Fe muralist Joerael Numina to paint fantastical images — a dragon and a wolf — that pay homage to stories by George R. R. Martin.

The revamped 18-mile spur of the Santa Fe Southern line, established in 1880, takes passengers between Santa Fe and Lamy, New Mexico. Step on board and enjoy one of the many themed rides out into the landscape of New Mexico. The wine train joins the Margarita Rail, the Sunset Serenade, the Lore of the Land, and many other Sky Railway adventures.

New Mexico Wine Country

Currently, most New Mexico wineries can be found along the Rio Grande, near Santa Fe and Albuquerque, but areas near the Mesilla Valley and the Mimbres Valley also produce excellent wines. New Mexico’s unique climate and geography make it a prime location for growing grapes that produce distinctive and flavorful wines. You might enjoy learning about the history of New Mexico wines.

If the Sky Railway Wine Train inspires you to try more New Mexico wines, visit the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Festival held every fall.
