Computer Networks Terms and Terminology - February 17, 2017

Computer networks come in all shapes and sizes. The computer networking industry describes designs of computer networks as an area network. Historically that has been the case, so most likely they will continue to called the same thing. The amazing fact now about an area network is that technology has become so advanced, critical and impactful that almost organizations rely on them daily. The fact of the matter is without a well designed effective area network most companies, schools and other organizations would not be able to do business. Area networks in use today are as follows:

  • DAN - Desk Area Network
  • PAN - Personal Area Network
  • CAN - Campus Area Network, Controller Area Network, or sometimes Cluster Area Network
  • SAN - Storage Area Network, System Area Network, Server Area Network, or sometimes Small Area Network
  • MAN - Metropolitan Area Network
  • WAN - Wide Area Network
  • LAN - Local Area Network
  • WLAN - Wireless Local Area Network

The area networks that were established when computer networks came to be were WAN and LAN. Over time additional area networks developed, bringing about an entire list of categories currently in the marketplace.

Computer networking in Santa Fe is a good example of the variety of organizations that have them and the number of different types of area networks that are in place in a given community or area. Santa Fe, NM has the City of Santa Fe, the State of New Mexico, Santa Fe County and 1000’s of businesses and each one of them have version of an area network designed, installed and supported by a computer networking support division or a computer networking company.
