"Denise McCluggage is an iconic personality and she epitomizes everything that has attracted people to Santa Fe for 400 years"
The City of Santa Fe is known around the world as “The City Different.” Residents and tourists alike are attracted to this area by the unique architecture, 400 years of history, art, the turquoise sky and soaring mountains and the confluence of the Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo cultures.
The people of Santa Fe are also different—independent and diverse, adventure seekers and individuals who have lived lives rich in experi-ences. Denise McCluggage has lived in Santa Fe for more than 35 years and fits this description precisely.
McCluggage raced with some of most famous race car drivers in history—Phil Hill, the only American to win a Formula 1 championship; Sir Stirling Moss, Britain’s greatest race car driver; and, Carroll Shelby, a colorful American race car driver and builder of American sports and muscle cars that bear his name. McCluggage raced all over the world and earned acceptance in what was truly a “man’s world” at that time.
McCluggage will be honored at this year’s Santa Fe Concorso, the premier automotive gathering in the Southwest, September 27–29. Now in its fourth year, the Concorso has already earned a strong local and national following and attracts more than 100 rare and exotic cars and motorcycles. The Sunday Concorso takes place at The Club at Las Campanas. Some of those 100 vehicles will be ones that McCluggage actually raced herself, gathered from U.S. collections and abroad.
In addition to a life in racing, McCluggage has been an automotive journalist for more than 60 years. She was involved in the founding of what would become Autoweek magazine. In addition to racing she has also sailed, taught, written a book on skiing and is an award-winning photographer, to name just a few of her accomplishments. And, she is one of the founders of the Santa Fe Concorso.
At age 86, McCluggage is still going strong. she continues to attend and write about auto events around the world. She is a sought-after judge at major automotive events such as Pebble Beach and Amelia Island and, she has started a company to publish car-related books for the Kindle.
