Millennials for Javier Gonzales Announce ‘The Drive To 500’

Staff | - January 10, 2014

An initiative to add 500 new young voters.

Millennials for Javier Gonzales is a team of prominent 18-35 year olds who have organized to rally our demographic to get involved in the 2014 Santa Fe Mayoral Election.  Our first initiative is called “The Drive To 500”, and the goal is to get 500 new voters between the age of 18-35 in this year’s election.  Though our support is firmly with Javier Gonzales, and we feel that he is by far the best candidate to represent our demographic as Mayor of Santa Fe, our belief is that participation – no matter the candidate – should be the focus.

Did you know that less than 50 people between the age of 18-24 voted in the 2010 Mayoral Election?

When we heard this, we knew we had to do something.  The Millennial generation often times wonders why we are ignored when it comes to city policy.  The truth is, we are ignored because we do not participate in local government.  Registering to vote, voting in elections, and following-up with presence at council meetings will result in an increased piece of the pie.

Millennials for Javier Gonzales will be hosting a series of music events during the week leading up to the registration deadline on Feb. 3rd in hopes of registering new voters.  Leaders and promoters in many of the sub-cultures in Santa Fe are organizing free music events at different venues around the city where attendees can register to vote.  More information on those events will be sent out next week.
