Santa Fe Events for January 2020

Diet Drinking, Wedding Expo, Mountain Music and more

January has a reputation for being downright dreary. Coming on the heels of a joyous holiday season, these 31 days often seem to stretch on forever, and even longer. In Santa Fe, though, you don't have to face this month with sinking spirits. In fact, you'll feel quite the opposite once you discover all that's on tap in the City Different. From slope-side concerts to cocktail classes, traveling acrobats,  an annual craft beer celebration and more, January is bustling with fun and festivity, and without all the crowds.

Read on for some spirited ways to experience Santa Fe this month.

The Wedding Party

Planning a wedding, a gala party or another grand event this year? Don't miss The City Different Wedding & Event Expo on Saturday, January 11, from 1 to 4 pm  at La Fonda on the Plaza. Presented by The Liquid Muse Events and La Fonda, this elegant affair offers you the chance to meet a curated selection of local wedding professionals who can help with booking your ideal wedding venue. You'll also get to talk with photographers, florists, musicians and many other people who play essential roles in weddings and other gala events. For instance, you can visit with vendors from La Fonda, Eldorado Hotel & Spa, Inn & Spa at Loretto, Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado de Santa Fe and other venues, as well as florists from Amanda's Flowers. Listen to live music from Matthew Andrae, Roberto Capocchi, Savor and other musicians. Get great ideas for wedding dresses during a fashion show. Admission is free, and $5 gets you a VIP ticket that includes a complimentary cocktail and a chance to win some awesome raffle prizes.

Drinks for Dieters

If you've joined the millions of people who've resolved to get fit this year, you'll be thrilled to hear what's shaking at Susan's Fine Wine and Spirits. The New Year's Resolution: Skinny Cocktails event, held January 10 from 4:30 to 6 pm, features Laura Reich, a geophysicist-turned-mixologist who will demonstrate that you do not have to swear off cocktails to lose weight. In fact, you don't even have to give up great taste. After devoting endless hours to trying out multiple combinations of spirits, flavors and more, Reich has created classic and contemporary cocktails that are guaranteed to wow you. You'll sip complimentary samples and you can purchase full-size cocktails that won't drain your wallet. Best of all, you can take copies of Reich's recipes home with you so you can stick to your resolution and still enjoy Happy Hour.

Winter Cheer at Santa Fe Farmer's Market

If you're visiting Santa Fe during the Martin Luther King Day weekend, plenty of fun awaits, starting with the 9th annual WinterBrew Fest at the Santa Fe Farmers Market Pavilion on January 17, 5-9 pm. This bash brings together nearly 20 breweries from across New Mexico, from beloved beer makers to brand new breweries making their debut. They'll be pouring pilsners, lagers, IPAs and much more, along with winter favorites such as porters, stouts, barley wines and barrel-aged seasonals. To top it off, you'll get a commemorative pint glass to take home. Now that's a cool way to beat the winter blues.

In with Zin at Susan's Fine Wine & Spirits

If wine's more your style, check out the Zinfandel Retrospective at Susan's Fine Wine & Spirits on January 17, 4:30-6 pm. With Tyler Rudoff of National Distributing Company at the helm, you'll explore the styles and regions of this small black grape grown in more than 10 percent of California vineyards. As you taste zinfandels from Napa, the Russian River Valley and Lodi, you'll learn about the grape's terroir and climate as well as diverse wine-making styles.

Astounding Acrobats at The Lensic

Whether they're trick cycling, precision tumbling or performing jaw-dropping feats of juggling, The Peking Acrobats are wondrous to see. For more than 30 years, this Chinese troupe of acrobats has astounded audiences with gravity-defying skills and dexterity. When they take the stage of The Lensic Performing Arts Center on January 17 at 7 pm, their brilliantly colored costumes and sets will recreate the ambiance of a festive Chinese carnival. Keep an eye out for the pagoda of chairs, stacked precariously in the air. This maneuver set the world record for Human Chair Stack on the Guinness Book Primetime television show.

Mountain Music at Ski Santa Fe

Nothing goes better with a day on the slopes than a chance to kick back for some live music. You can do just that at Ski Santa Fe on January 18, when local favorite Sean Healen will be playing some rock'n' roll with sounds-of-folk originals on the deck of Totemoff's Bar and Grill, 11 am to 3 pm. (You may have heard “Healen's New 52” on Hutton Broadcasting's KBAC 98.1 FM, where the musician's been releasing a new song every Thursday for more than year!) Grab a burger and a local craft beer as you soak up the tunes in the Santa Fe sun. Live music takes place every Saturday at Totemoff's as part of the Ski Santa Fe Winter Series so check out the schedule to see who else is playing.
