2011 National Public Lands Day

- September 22, 2011

"...plan on getting outside in the next couple of weekends. The weather's great!"

Saturday, September 24 is National Public Lands Day!  This is the single largest public lands volunteer event of the year.  This year, more than 180,000 people are expected to participate in over 180 projects across the country.

And it falls when Santa Fe's weather is usually picture-perfect.  There are lots of trails open for your enjoyment, but consider spending time on Saturday or in the next couple of weeks volunteering a couple of hours to helping maintain some favorite trails.

The Trails Alliance of Santa Fe, Fat Tire Society and REI are working together on the Dale Ball Trails.  See http://www.rei.com/santafe for details and to register.  Other projects are planned for all sorts of public lands elsewhere in New Mexico.  See http://www.publiclandsday.org/npld-sites/search?state=New+Mexico for more.

Fenton Lake State Park is celebrating National Hunting and Fishing Day that same time--New Mexico free fishing day is Saturday (no license needed, but all other regulations apply).  Hyde Memorial State Park is having a star-watch party that same evening. Click here for more on either event.

The next volunteer project for the Santa Fe National Forest is a clean-up and work on a brand-new trail on the Caja del Rio, west of Santa Fe. Volunteers for that are invited to meet at Jinja Restaurant, 510 N. Guadalupe, at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 1 to car-pool to the site.

So plan on getting outside in the next couple of weekends. The weather's great!
