"An encore performance from March..."
Just as the winds of March have died down and we are settled into a (so far) gentle spring, the whirlwind known as Aspen Santa Fe Ballet comes back into town for an encore performance of its March offerings. I have long since given up the idea that any performance scheduled between the 15 and 17 of March was scheduled either to celebrate my birthday or St. Patrick’s Day and I have stopped trying to go to all of them. An encore performance by ASFB from that very time frame gives me a second chance to see this program and no excuse not to. The performance, scheduled for Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. at The Lensic, is aptly named Encore! and features Jorma Elo’s latest ASFB commission, Over Glow, Norbert De La Cruz III’s Square None and Nicolo Fonte’s enduring ballet, Left Unsaid.
Boston Ballet’s resident choreographer since 2005, Jorma Elo is one of the most sought-after choreographers in the world, creating work for New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Vienna State Opera Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Royal Danish Ballet, Finnish National Ballet, New York City Ballet and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Elo has created six world premieres for Boston Ballet, alone: Sharp Side of Dark (2002), Plan to B (2004), Carmen (2006), Brake the Eyes (2007), In On Blue (2008) and Le Sacre du Printemps (2009).
Nicolo Fonte’s ballets have been created for or staged by numerous companies throughout the United States and Europe, among them: The Dutch National Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Stuttgart Ballet, Ballett Mainz, Ballett Nürnberg, The Washington Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Tulsa Ballet and Ballet British Columbia. ASFB brings Fonte’s Left Unsaid back to The Lensic on April 17.
Born in the Philippines and raised in Los Angeles, choreographer Norbert L. De La Cruz III rounds out this evening at The Lensic, bringing his very-popular Square None back for this repeat performance.
