Bite: Dream Cakes Gourmet Cupcakes - August 18, 2011

"When you open the wrapper, the cupcake is like a little delicious work of art..."

I have been to this cupcake place about a dozen times because I used to work directly across the street from it.  Dream Cakes took over a popular fro-yo spot for the winter months and did so well that they moved to a summer location in the Plaza Galleria (right next to Subway).

Distance from Trader Joe's: 1.5 miles/ 6 minutes

Address: 66 E San Francisco St.

Phone Number: 505.930.2027

Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily (soon to be 8 a.m.-8 p.m. for the summer)

Average Price: $3-5 per cupcake

Vegan Options: Yes

Gluten Free Options: Yes

Why I love this spot: I have been privileged enough to try about 20 different cupcakes, mostly due to the generosity of my co-workers, who have been buying these cupcakes after lunch on a semi-regular basis.   When you open the wrapper, the cupcake is like a little delicious work of art.

I have loved each flavor I have tried, from the classic Red Velvet to the more complex flavors (Green Chile Cupcake, anyone?)  They have 12 flavors each day, but there's only a limited amount of cupcakes, as the owners cook them fresh in their kitchen at home every single night. Also, I must mention that they donate all leftover cupcakes to the homeless shelter at the end of the day.  I love it.

Owners Joe and Laura have told me they are going to try to have at least two gluten-free and two vegan options.  They will keep this up, but only if the cupcakes are popular, so I encourage you to try them soon!
