Beyond the Land of Enchantment: "Wonderful article by Nicolai Ourousoff in the Times, about the extraordinary building designed by 'starchitect' Rem Koolhaas in Beijing."

Wonderful article by Nicolai Ourousoff in the Times, about the extraordinary building designed by “starchitect” Rem Koolhaas in Beijing. I saw it there and I found it astounding in scale and beauty. Follow the rss feed below.

“At moments monumental and combative, at others strangely elusive, almost retiring, Rem  Koolhaas’ CCTV building in Beijing is one of the most beguiling and powerful works I’ve seen in a lifetime of looking at architecture”…New York Times.

I guess they don’t have an architectural review board like we do here in Santa Fe. While I am a great fan of preservation, I also like to see contemporary architecture imbedded in the traditional fabric of a community, especially when the new building is replacing one of little or no historic design significance. When the design submissions for a new convention center were revealed for downtown Santa Fe on the site of the old Sweeney gym, I was saddened that there was no entry from Frank Gehry. You see, I thought that a Gehry structure –all titanium clad with curvilinear surfaces would have been a perfect match for the Marcy Street site If we then sprayed the whole thing with stucco.
