The Greer Garson Theatre Launches Theater for All

- December 2, 2011

“Unsold tickets available at no cost before the curtain opens…”

The Greer Garson Theatre at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design is bringing live theater to local patrons with a new no-cost admission program. Theatre for All provides unsold tickets at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis. The program will launch with the upcoming production of Angels in America, Part I: Millennium Approaches on December 2.

“This idea will serve several purposes,” said John Weckesser, chair of the Performing Arts Department. “We’ll be able to help serve the Northern New Mexico community by offering tickets to patrons who, in these difficult economic times, need to limit what they spend on entertainment.  At the same time, we hope to introduce live theater to people who are not familiar with the joy of being part of an audience – and especially being part of the audience at the Greer Garson Theatre. There are a variety of reasons why people don’t attend live theater, and finances don’t need to be one of them.”

Theatre for All will work like this: The tickets will be available only at the theatre, beginning one hour before curtain of each show, and will be handed out for 30 minutes or until they are gone. People who come for a free ticket must register. Each person can receive only one ticket, and this offer is not available to groups (groups wishing to receive special pricing can contact the box office).

“Our subscribers, and those people who wish to buy individual tickets and thus have guaranteed seating, are still the foundation of our audience.  They can still purchase their tickets like always, and select their seats,” says Weckesser.  “The free tickets will be limited in number and location.  It’s simply our attempt to be as inclusive as possible.”

Angels in America, written by Tony Kushner and directed by Jon Jory, will be performed December 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11. Performances begin at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets with confirmed seating can be purchased in advance by calling Tickets Santa Fe at 988-1234 and will also be sold at the door.

Due to adult themes and language, this show is not recommended for children under 14 years of age.
