Theater Grottesco’s Annual Summer Bash Saturday August 24

Casey St. Charnez - August 20, 2013

"In years past, the place has been packed, and the action hoppin’"

Theater Grottesco, Santa Fe’s premier thespian ensemble, stages its yearly fundraiser—the “Summer Bash”—Saturday August 24 at Jackalope from 5-8pm.

The admirably affordable cost is $20 for adults (or $25 at the door), and an amazing $10 for students with ID and for kids. The admission, even more invitingly, includes a dinner of Vera Cruz cuisine from Jaroco’s Taqueria (that’s the cool food truck that’s always out in front of the place), plus drinks (soda, juices, beer, wine, and, most appropriately, champagne).

Spanish guitarist Mito will play live music throughout.

In years past, the place has been packed, and the action hoppin’. “It’s really a family event,” says managing director Barbara Hatch. “It’s for adults, and for children, and for adults who are children.”

Accordingly, there is a plethora of pay-to-play games, a raffle, and a silent auction.

The games include jacks, balloon darts, ring toss, chicken in a pot, tiddly-winks…and blackjack. Every game player gets a prize of one kind or another. Guaranteed.

Among the raffle offerings are a Peruvian chrysocolla necklace and earrings, various gift certificates, a massage, an acupuncture session, and an original print by Cyril Christo and Marie Wilkinson. Raffle tickets are 1 for $3, 2 for $5, and 5 for $10.

For those unaware (as I was, until asked to moderate one of their shows last March at the CCA), TG has been around for over 30 years, with its roots in Paris. They’ve been a fixture on the local theater scene since 1996. The “Summer Bash,” which they’re calling a celebration of their 30th birthday, is their only public outreach for funds, other than ticket sales.

TG’s Web site is You may call 505-474-8400 for tickets and more information. The credit card fee is $3 per ticket. And of course, the donations are tax-deductible.

Jackalope is at 2820 Cerrillos Road, and everything Bash-y is happening on the patio just outside their furniture building.

Sounds like fun. Lisa and I have already sent in our RSVPs.

And you?
