New DVDs:
Ernest and Celestine (2012-France-Belgium) C-80min. An artsy mouse and a grumpy bear find adventure on and under the cobblestone streets of a big city. Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature (Frozen, of course, won), from the books by Gabrielle Vincent (available at the SF Public Library). The Final Member (2013-Canada) C-82min. CoD: Jonah Bekhor & Zach Math. Documentary on the Icelandic Phallological Museum and the curious men anxious to be the donor of the collection’s first human penis. Seems like a mockumentary, but it isn’t, and it can be extremely funny if seen in the right spirit. [R]

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) C-100min. D: Wes Anderson. Ralph Fiennes, F. Murray Abraham, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton. Pictaresque adventures of a concierge and a bellboy, set in the time between the World Wars. Based on the works of Stefan Zweig (some available at the SF Public Library). [R]

Jimmy P. (2014-US-France) C-117min. D,Sc: Arnaud Despléchin. Benicio Del Toro, Matthieu Amalric. Just after WW2, a Blackfoot Indian with shell shock (now called PTSD) enters a military hospital. A French anthropologist is there to help him. Earnest psychiatric drama, based on Georges Devereux’s 1951 book Reality and Dream: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian. But it should have starred a Native American. [NR]

Joe (2014) C-117min. D: David Gordon Green. Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan. An ex-con tries to show a troubled teen the right way down the road. A fine return to real acting by Cage, an Oscar winner for Leaving Las Vegas, who overspent himself into bankruptcy and had to take anything (Ghost Rider) just to stay afloat. Welcome back, Nic.  [R]

Voices: Will Arnett, Will Farrell, Morgan Freeman, Jonah Hill, Liam Neeson, Shaquille O’Neal, Channing Tatum, plus Anthony Daniels as the voice of C-3PO and Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. And remember: Everything Is Awesome! [PG]

Just when a man thinks his life is at its absolute worst, a fateful and mysterious phone call changes everything—and makes it much better at first, then much, much worse. Not quite a horror movie, more of a grisly morality play. [R]
