Meet Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance

The Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance (HRA) is dedicated to fostering LGBTQ+ inclusion, pride, and acceptance. Established in 1993, the organization emerged from a passionate grassroots movement in response to the defeat of Senate Bill 91, which sought to advance civil rights for lesbians and gay men. Driven by a commitment to combat discrimination, HRA has since evolved into a pivotal non-profit advocating for the rights of all individuals in New Mexico.

At its core, HRA aims to educate, engage, and empower communities by building coalitions and promoting inclusive policies. The organization’s outreach efforts are diverse and impactful. Key initiatives include:

  • Annual PRIDE Santa Fe Celebration: Held the last weekend of June, this event is a vibrant celebration of LGBTQ+ pride and unity, drawing together community members for a weekend of festivities.
  • Youth PRIDE: Aimed at supporting and celebrating the younger LGBTQ+ community, this program provides a platform for youth to express themselves and connect with peers.
  • Human Rights Alliance Endowed Education Scholarship: This scholarship, offered through the Santa Fe Community College, helps to support the educational aspirations of LGBTQ+ students.

HRA’s current goals focus on strengthening community ties and addressing the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in the Santa Fe area. These goals include:

  • Engaging in Meaningful Dialogue: HRA strives to create open channels of communication with the local LGBTQ+ community to better understand and address their needs.
  • Building a Diverse Community: Through proactive communication and support, HRA aims to cultivate a community that is inclusive and supportive of all its members.
  • Responding to LGBTQ+ Needs: By providing outreach and program support, HRA seeks to address and respond to the evolving needs of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Advocating for Human and Civil Rights: The organization plays a crucial role in advocating for legislation that supports human and civil rights.
  • Strengthening Relationships with Allies: HRA works to build and maintain strong relationships with allies who share its mission of equality and justice.
  • Enhancing Program Participation and Effectiveness: The organization is committed to increasing engagement with its programs and continually evaluating their impact.
