Upcoming Shows & Events

New Performance by Victory Grrrls
Saturday, February 11, 3:00 pm

form & concept is excited to debut a new performance piece by local, interdisciplinary art collective Victory Grrrls on Saturday, February 11 at 3:00 pm. The performance takes place the day after form & concept’s WISC Fellowship Presentation on Judy Chicago by Chad Alligood, curator of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, which will feature a Q&A session with Chicago.
Playing on feminist themes that Chicago has explored throughout her career, local artists Niomi Fawn, Thais Mather and Lucy Madeline will illuminate the continued vitality of the powerful social movement that was bolstered by Chicago’s artworks and activism. The gallery will accept a sliding scale donation of $5-$10 in support of the artists.

Judy Chicago at form & concept.

Friday, February 10, 5:00 pm. Reception with artist to follow.
The Women’s International Study Center (WISC) and form & concept present a WISC Fellowship Presentation on Judy Chicago by Chad Alligood, curator of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Throughout the month of February, Alligood will be in residence at WISC to draft an essay for an upcoming monograph on Chicago by the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Chicago herself will be in attendance as Alligood recounts a fascinating chapter of her life at this special presentation.
The event is at form & concept on Friday, February 10th at 5:00 pm, with a reception to follow. Seating is limited for this free event, so please click here to reserve a seat. In addition to reserved seating, there will be a public standing room and a Facebook Live broadcast of this event.

Mark Newport: Mending
Opening Friday, February 24, 5-7 pm.

Mark Newport returns to form & concept gallery for a solo exhibition that cuts to the heart of the Michigan textile artist’s practice. Mending features torn muslin cloths with meticulously embroidered patches, a symbol of the scars that life etches on the body and psyche. The show opens on Friday, February 24 from 5-7 pm and runs through May 20, 2017. Newport will speak about his work at our gallery talk on Saturday, February 25 from 2-3 pm.

“This series explores the idea of repair and scarring,” says Newport. “I was a very accident-prone child. I have some scars.” The artwork in Mending stands in stark contrast to the artist’s first exhibition at form & concept. In the gallery’s ReFashion group show, Newport presented hand-knit superhero suits. “The costumes suggest the body, masculinity, armor,” Newport explains. “This new series is more about vulnerability, so I’m flipping that coin on its head.”
