form & concept is excited to debut a new performance piece by local, interdisciplinary art collective Victory Grrrls on Saturday, February 11 at 3:00 pm. The performance takes place the day after form & concept’s WISC Fellowship Presentation on Judy Chicago by Chad Alligood, curator of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, which will feature a Q&A session with Chicago. Playing on feminist themes that Chicago has explored throughout her career, local artists Niomi Fawn, Thais Mather and Lucy Madeline will illuminate the continued vitality of the powerful social movement that was bolstered by Chicago’s artworks and activism. The gallery will accept a sliding scale donation of $5-$10 in support of the artists.
Victory Grrrls was cofounded by Fawn, Mather and Madeline in 2016. “It felt like we’d finally found our tribe,” says Mather. “This is the prime time to be doing what we know is our calling: to be feminist activists.” The group’s name is drawn from two sources: a United States campaign poster from World War II, and the 1990’s feminist punk rock movement Riot grrrl. All three artists make visual art in a variety of mediums, and also have extensive experience with performance art. In the new performance piece at form & concept, the Victory Grrrls will each present a vignette on a specific theme related to their art practice.
