Based on the book Moquis and Kastiilam: Hopis, Spaniards and the Trauma of History a panel will delve into the story of the first encounter in 1540 between the Hopis (who the Spaniards called Moquis) and the Spaniards (who the Hopis called Kastiilam) until the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. The panelists will discuss the balance of historical documents with oral histories creating a fresh perspective on the interface of Spanish and Hopi in the period of missionization.
