Summer Classes for Kids, Tweens, Teens and Adults
New classes on flying drones, web developer boot camp and cartooning for adults
SANTA FE, NM – Summer is almost here, and Santa Fe Community College’s Continuing Education Department offers fun, inspiring programs for participants of all ages: kids age 3 and up, tweens, teens and adults. The campus is a perfect place for summer classes, where you can learn something new at an affordable price. Registration is open now; call 505-428-1676.
“We have more than 35 new classes,” Kris Swedin, SFCC’s Director of Continuing Education and Contract Training, said. “This summer there are several instructors offering classes for kids as well as adults such as our new drone skills workshops and classes in cartooning.” Eric Teitelbaum, one of the co-creators of the Pink Panther Comic Strip, is back by popular demand. He will team up with Scott Saltsman, former art director for Stan Lee and creator of Spiderman, for a full day art workshop: “Cartooning with the Pros: The art workshop for anyone who wants to learn how to draw.” The two will offer classes for kids, as well.
There are all sorts of classes for kids from tots to teens. Youngsters can learn how to swim, skateboard, cook, play guitar, create fashions or be in a theater production. Several outdoor adventure classes will stimulate learning and teamwork while having fun on SFCC’s Ropes Challenge Course. Budding scientists can have fun building and engineering robots. Kids (ages 6 to 9) can participate in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) explorations with lots of hands-on activities with robotics and electronic circuits. Tweens and teens can learn media art skills, website design or computer programming. Also, new this summer is “SFCC Living Labs: Food, Energy and Water” where teens will get lots of hands-on experience by exploring the college’s innovative solar, hydroponic, greenhouse, water conservation and composting technologies.
“CE’s language courses are always popular,” Swedin said. “This summer you can take two-week Spanish language intensives or a series of classes throughout the summer.” Other language offerings include Learning French with French Cinema and Italian for Opera Lovers.
For those looking for new professional development opportunities or career advancement, CE offers many business skills classes, as well as courses leading to green construction and energy efficiency certifications.
Classes will also offer outdoor fun and adventure on hiking trails, on horseback or through explorations of art. Excursions offered this summer will include a visit to Ohkay Owingeh’s Corn Dance, Chaco Canyon and to the Valles Caldera.
New offerings include a class in Pueblo Style Loom Beading, Glorious Greek Cuisine and a Women & Money Workshop (sponsored by Women’s International Study Center and Santa Fe Community College Foundation) taught by a nationally-recognized financial behaviorist Jacquette Timmons.
