The Lensic Performing Arts Center
& Wise Fool New Mexico
Present
The Ninth Annual
CIRCUS LUMINOUS
November 25-27

Santa Fe, NM – The Lensic Performing Arts Center and Wise Fool New Mexico are proud to present the ninth production of the annual Thanksgiving weekend tradition, Circus Luminous, a collaborative production created each year by the local artists and technical crew of the two organizations.

Circus Luminous returns with an uplifting story of inspiration and transformation. One night, Mr. G, a curmudgeon who likes to control things, including the flowers in his yard, finds himself transported to another world by the fuzzy puffs of dandelion seeds. There he discovers that the simplest beings, from bees to caterpillars to dandelions, can be full of magic and beauty. The Circus features aerial fabric acts, acrobatics, trapeze, stilt-walkers, clowns and the break dancing of 3HC Holy Faith.

Director Sarah-Jane Moody, a lead character in many past Circus Luminous productions, wrote the story and directs. The thrust of this year’s production is a “good old-fashioned uplifting story,” Moody said. “It’s inspiring to see the blossoming of Mr. G, from bitter curmudgeon to a person who can see the beauty in all things.”

And then there’s the magnificence of the elk. Elk? Yes, a pair of elk as well as bumble bees, a giant caterpillar, a dog named Chicharron, humming birds and dragonflies all appear on Mr. G’s journey. Ten students from Moving Arts Española, a nonprofit performing arts outreach program will perform this year on stilts as whimsical insects.

Furthering this year’s connection with Española, Mr. G is played by Roger Montoya, a former professional dancer, gymnast, visual artist and community activist who started Moving Arts Española in 2008, in response to a number of violent racially motivated acts in the city that same year. Montoya was honored to have been asked to be part of Circus Luminous, he said, adding that his organization and Wise Fool New Mexico have similar styles and values and often collaborate.

“It’s always a very inventive show, and the script this year has a very nice sense of humor and a very organic connection with the world,” Montoya said of this year’s production.

Local musician Jeremy Bleich composed the music for the production and will play in and conduct The Luminous Orchestra, a group of local musicians including: JQ Witcomb, Mark Weaver, Scott Barkan and Paul “Feathericci” Groetzinger.

The staff of The Lensic and Wise Fool begin to collaborate in October to hammer out the technical elements of the show, said Sarah LeBlanc, Lensic production manager. Time is of the essence as the show comes together in just two days before the dress rehearsal on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, November 23.

“The Lensic technical staff works with Wise Fool to set up the many different pieces needed for a show of this size,” she said. “This year we have two projectors, in addition to special lighting effects, the set pieces and the rigging for aerial acts. We work together to get it all organized and designed ahead of time.”

Circus Luminous is proudly sponsored by Los Alamos National Bank
