Medical care is a key part of any community and CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center works to fill a critical role in the Santa Fe area. The award-winning facility offers a wide range of services to meet patient needs, bringing dignity and respect to each person seeking care or treatment.
As a leader in New Mexico healthcare, CHRISTUS St. Vincent brings medical expertise as well as plenty of heart to treating patients. A visit may be different than what many expect from a traditional hospital.
Christus St. Vincent history & more
CHRISTUS St. Vincent has a long history of serving New Mexicans. Founded in 1865 by the Sisters of Charity, the hospital’s formation came even before the Land of Enchantment became a state.
The hospital was the first organized healthcare facility in the New Mexico territory. More than 150 years later, the CHRISTUS St. Vincent mission remains — “to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve.”
As a private, nonprofit health system, Christus serves more than 300,000 people in across seven counties in Northern New Mexico. The system is the largest private employer in Santa Fe with a medical staff of more than 400 providers covering 39 services and lines of specialty care. That ranges from heart/vascular care and neurology to physical therapy, rehabilitation, geriatric care, and much more.
The system is also fully equipped to treat trauma and cancer, allowing providers to serve patients with some of the most serious ailments and conditions. This is a major asset not just to the Santa Fe area, but to New Mexicans across the state.
CHRISTUS St. Vincent was certified as a primary stroke center by the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association in 2022. The facility is also a Level III Trauma Center and operates a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
As Northern New Mexico’s top comprehensive hospital facility, CHRISTUS St. Vincent and its staff are dedicated to offering the highest-quality care. A look at the numbers is impressive. In one year, CHRISTUS St. Vincent has:
- 422,099 outpatient visits
- 9,474 inpatient visits
- 38,676 emergency department visits
- 8,692 surgeries
- 904 babies delivered
Looking to the Future
If all this wasn’t enough, management continues expanding services and care. The system has a thriving sports medicine program and has made virtual care a focus in recent years as well.
All patients receive the care they need regardless of ability to pay. CHRISTUS provides millions of dollars in uncompensated care each year and staff members enjoy this role in serving the community. This includes serving as a founding member of Santa Fe’s Community Health Funder Alliance.
In 2019, the hospital became a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network – the first organization in New Mexico to join. Through this partnership, local healthcare providers have access to Mayo Clinic knowledge and expertise including research, diagnostic, and treatment resources. Local patients receive the benefit from these resources and CHRISTUS St. Vincent hopes to build on this collaboration in the coming years.
“CHRISTUS St. Vincent has become a leader in patient safety and quality of care,” President and CEO Lillian Montoya said of the Mayo Clinic distinction. “Choosing to work with Mayo Clinic was a natural next step in our journey to always deliver an outstanding patient experience. By extending the clinical reach of our providers, our patients, and their families won’t have to travel to an unfamiliar place or leave their loved ones behind to get a second opinion from one of the finest names in health care.”
