El Rancho de Las Golondrinas

Experience the past at El Rancho de Las Golondrinas — an unparalleled living history museum! Situated just south of Santa Fe, this Ranch of the Swallows takes you back to the 18th and 19th centuries, showcasing life during the Spanish, Mexican, and Territorial eras of New Mexico.

As you wander through the museum’s expansive 500-acre site, you’ll encounter historical scenes at every corner. Costumed interpreters and talented artisans bring cultural practices and traditional crafts to life, demonstrating skills such as weaving, milling, blacksmithing, horno bread baking, and woodworking. The museum features over 30 historic buildings, meticulously preserved and restored to their original state. From classic adobe placitas to rustic log cabins, each structure offers insight into the daily life of early New Mexico. As a functioning ranch, the site displays agricultural methods and houses various farm animals, including churro sheep, burros, and goats. Additionally, the property boasts beautiful landscapes, miles of walking trails, and the Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve for visitors to explore.

El Rancho de Las Golondrinas offers a hands-on experience, unlike traditional history museums where artifacts sit behind glass. Here, you’re encouraged to actively participate in historical activities instead of just watching. Kids, in particular, can engage in activities like digging for artifacts, grinding corn, tin stamping, and weaving on a loom. These interactive experiences provide a fun way to learn about New Mexico’s history and culture.

Alongside self-guided tours, El Rancho de Las Golondrinas organizes lively festivals and programs celebrating the area’s heritage. Some of the museum’s most popular events include:

  • Santa Fe Spring Festival, June 1–2
  • Santa Fe Wine Festival, July 6–7
  • Fiesta de Los Niños, July 20-21
  • Santa Fe Beer & Food Festival, August 10–11
  • Santa Fe Renaissance Faire, September 14–15
  • Santa Fe Harvest Festival, October 5–6
  • Spirits of New Mexico, October 26

These festivals include live entertainment, vendor markets, delicious food and drinks, and educational activities for all ages. To attend one of these festivals, reserve your tickets online ahead of time, as they often sell out, and many do not sell tickets at the door.

For a unique and memorable experience, bring your family and friends to El Rancho de Las Golondrinas. With its beautifully maintained historic buildings, engaging educational programs, and breathtaking natural scenery, this living history museum is a must-visit destination in Santa Fe. The museum is open for self-guided tours from June through October, Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. Private tours can be reserved from April through October. When you visit, remember to bring water bottles, sun protection, and sturdy walking shoes. Plan your trip at golondrinas.org!
