Site Santa Fe presents the first installation in the Creative Residencies program, celebrating creative people doing extraordinary work in our community, August 12-September 13, 2021. Site Santa Fe’s first Creative Residencies installation features the work of Megan Goldberg, who explores the creativity inherent in American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation through three projects. Goldberg’s first project, presented in June at the Motorama Drive-In, investigated how sounds without signs are interpreted by tasking a group of ASL interpreters with creatively interpreting a variety of sounds curated by musician Alex Simon. In Goldberg’s second project, she engaged her friend and colleague, Cassandra Perez, a Deaf community member, to sign a story about her experience of gentrification in Santa Fe. Then, different ASL interpreters voice her story, showing how ASL interpretation can be influenced by the perspective of the interpreter. In her third project, Goldberg created GIFs for ASL interpretation, combining the visual language of art with the visual language of ASL. These projects will be featured in video installations and QR codes in SITE Santa Fe’s galleries. For more information about this event, visit the website.
