LIVESTREAM Botany Basics – An Introduction to the Aster and Buttercup Families:

In the fall, many of the Asteraceae family members bloom profusely providing late summer nectar and pollen for pollinators.  Also flowering and fruiting are the diverse members of the Ranunculaceae, or buttercup family.  In this class you will learn the characteristics of these two families, including the flowers, leaves, habit, and their ecological role in the environment.

We will look at examples from common garden plants and from New Mexico’s flora.  Participants are encouraged to have their own samples available to look at as we discuss the floral or fruit parts.  Look for asters, sunflowers, coneflowers, chamisa, knapweeds, ragweeds etc. as examples for the aster family and buttercups, clematis, delphiniums, monkshood, columbine, and baneberry etc. for examples of the buttercup family.
