“Roots & Rivers,” a program bridging American choral traditions with contemporary compositions, also forming the basis of Santa Fe Desert Chorale’s 2026 album. The program features the world premiere of Shawn E. Okpebholo’s “The American Road: Six Songs of the Enslaved, Embattled and Emancipated,” reimagining folk songs and spirituals. Reena Esmail’s “The Tipping Point” fuses Western and Indian music, performed with pianist Nathan Salazar and tabla player Sutanu Sur. The 24 vocal artists also perform recent commissions by Kile Smith and Jocelyn Hagen.

The Burning of Zozobra is a unique and long-standing tradition that marks the start of the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe. This dramatic event features the burning of a towering 50-foot marionette known as “Old Man Gloom,” symbolizing the destruction of anxiety and negativity. Created in 1924 by artist Will Shuster, Zozobra has grown from a small backyard effigy to a major community celebration drawing families and visitors from near and far. Festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. with live entertainment, leading to the fiery pageant at dusk where Zozobra is vanquished by the Fire Spirit, bringing hope and renewal for the year ahead.
