George R.R. Martin says his first response when approached about purchasing the long vacant Silva Lanes in Santa Fe was, “I’m not that into bowling.” It wasn’t long, however, before Vince Kadlubek, CEO of Santa Fe’s art collective Meow Wolf, was able to impart a new vision for the capacious piece of real estate located in an advancing industrial area of the City Different.
Today, Mayor Javier Gonzales joined George R.R., Vince, Executive Director of Tourism Randy Randall, and other civic nobility, in a press conference to inform media and community members of the formal plans that are in store for the property. The excitement throughout the gathering was conspicuous. The Mayor said, “We should feel incredible; our city is thriving and Meow Wolf is on the scene.” He called George R.R. Martin, who has awakened another Santa Fe landmark with his purchase of the Jean Cocteau Theater, “one of our city sons who has a lot of choices as a pop star – he picked Santa Fe, and he picked Meow Wolf.”
Vince Kadlubek elaborated for the crowd as many of Santa Fe’s photography giants buzzed about him (hi Kate Russell, Daniel Quat, Rima Krisst, Jane Phillips, and Gabriella Marks!). The plans for business and renovation of what will utlimately be known as “Meow Wolf’s Art Complex” include 19 affordable artists studios, potential for a fabulous food cart community in the immense parking lot, and 20,000 square feet of an explorable world that includes a Victorian house to be known as “House of Eternal Return.” Meow Wolf’s Art Complex will be open to the public, with the ultimate aim of being a premier family experience. Their market study expects them to see 100,000 visitors a year after kickoff.
As many of the populous who have big beautiful ideas often become keenly aware, money makes wings. Meow Wolf is actively seeking $1,000,000 of upfront capital (with $450,000 already committed) to bring Meow Wolf Art Complex alive. The first fundraising gala happens Feb. 21 at the Scottish Rite Temple. Undoubltedly, this will be the kind of unique and unforgettable event we have come to expect from Meow Wolf. See you there. This article was posted by Cheryl Fallstead
