Thirty years is a milestone for any community nonprofit, but when you’re an award-winning community powerhouse like Kitchen Angels, the stars take notice. Since 1992, Kitchen Angels has prepared and delivered more than 1,800,000 meals to 7,693 home-bound clients, utilizing over 4,000 volunteers. To celebrate this auspicious moment, the organization will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a benefit concert at the Santa Fe Opera, featuring legendary songbird Emmylou Harris and The Red Dirt Boys, Friday, September 23, 2022.
A 14-time Grammy Award winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Emmylou Harris’ contribution as a singer and songwriter spans 40 years. She has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to countless fellow artists’ recordings. In recognition of her remarkable career, Harris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008 and earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2018. Harris has sold more than 15 million records and garnered 14 Grammy Awards, three CMA Awards, and four Americana Music Awards.
Forty years into her career, Harris continues to share her hard-earned wisdom and has never stopped looking ahead. A longtime social activist, Harris has lent her voice to many causes. Most passionately to animal welfare. In 2004 she established Bonaparte’s Retreat with the goal of rescuing shelter dogs and adopting them into forever homes. This concert event proves that her activism extends beyond our four-legged friends, as she takes on hunger amongst those less fortunate among our two-legged community.
For 30 years, Kitchen Angels has served residents of Santa Fe and other Northern New Mexico communities who are homebound, in a health crisis, lack the resources for regular meals, and are not eligible for other local meal services. Kitchen Angels believes no one in our community who is homebound because of a chronic, surgery-related, or terminal medical condition should ever go without appropriate nutrition. Making sure those in need have enough to eat is simply the right thing to do.
Kitchen Angels formulates meals carefully to meet individual needs, serving healthy, fresh, and, when possible, local food to clients. Hot meals are delivered five days a week and frozen meals are made available for the weekends. To serve more people, operating costs are kept low by having only 5 paid staff persons, and relying on an amazing, dedicated army of volunteers over 350 strong to cook, package, and deliver meals to clients. In addition to meals, volunteers provide a friendly face, a kind word, and encouragement to home-bound individuals who may be isolated, alone, and without social support.
