Railyard History: From Railway to Renaissance
The first train arrived in Santa Fe in 1880, bringing waves of visitors from the east, curious about the city that had been the endpoint of the Santa Fe Trail throughout the 19th century. However, by the mid-20th century, the railway’s prominence waned, as traveling by automobile gained popularity, and as a result, the surrounding area fell into neglect.
Recognizing the potential of this historic yet underutilized property, the City of Santa Fe purchased 50 acres in the Railyard in 1995, launching a community-driven revitalization effort. In 2002, a master plan was approved, and by September 2008, the Railyard reopened with a grand celebration that welcomed over 10,000 visitors. Many arrived on the RailRunner Express commuter train.
The district’s rebirth included input from local citizens and even volunteer architects, resulting in a thoughtful mix of new and repurposed spaces.
Today, Santa Fe’s citizens and visitors can explore its galleries, shops, diverse local markets, live entertainment venues, and green spaces. The Railyard offers some of the best shopping, dining, and events in town. Railyard shopping offers a unique selection of local goods and produce, artisanal gifts, and contemporary art.
The Railyard’s urban transformation showcases Santa Fe’s dedication to preserving history while embracing the future. It has become one of the most distinctive, coveted, and celebrated districts in the city for its unique array of retail spaces, year-round markets to discover local flavors, and numerous versatile spaces ready to book your event and entertain you.
