Who doesn’t love the Golden Girls, the mid-80s television show that put aging into hilarious perspective? If you’ve ever wondered what became of Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia, The Golden Gays: Thank YULE For Being A Friend has the answer. As seen Off-Broadway, in Las Vegas, and on celebrity cruises, The Golden Gays are the only live singing musical Golden Girls drag troupe in the country, and they’re bringing their act to Santa Fe for one night only. The Golden Gays put the ladies back on the stage where they belong, at the Lensic Performing Arts Center, Wednesday, November 29, 7 p.m.
What the Show is About
Before traveling to spend the Holidays with their families, Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose participate in a golden gift exchange full of hilarious surprises. Just as they get to the airport a winter storm blows in, leaving them trapped! In an unexpected Charles Dickens twist of events, the three grannies must visit their past, present, and future to save Christmas (and find Sophia), just in time for turkey lurkey.
That’s right, Sophia has gone missing, and the Golden Gays must travel down the road and back again to find her with their interactive audience participation show. By the end of the show one lucky audience members is selected and crowned the next #TokenSophia!
Introducing The Golden Gays
The Golden Gays – featuring Jason B. Schmidt as Dorothy, Jonathan Chisolm as Blanche, and Gerry Mastrolia as Rose – are highly regarded as the best in their field, elevating the Golden Girls drag legacy to the next level by creating one-of-a-kind original musical parody adventures, and paying tribute to the show that fans know and love. They burst onto the scene in 2017, first at RuPaul’s DragCon NYC, then at the famed Rue La Rue Café, where their trivia show video went viral. What began as a flash mob has now skyrocketed to sold-out engagements all across America.
Since that auspicious debut, The Golden Gays have produced multiple successful tours, each one growing larger, with their hit musical shows Hot Flashbacks, The Golden Games, and Thank Yule For Being A Friend playing to enthusiastic audiences in New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Atlantic City, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, and more.
Hot Flashbacks premiered Off-Broadway at NYC’s Theatre Row in the summer of 2018. Each Fall, The Golden Gays participate in RuPaul’s DragCon NYC with their own booth, meeting hundreds of new Golden fans each year.
They have sailed the high seas, first with Vacaya Travel’s inaugural P-Town cruise in August 2019, and as the headlining entertainment for the annual Golden Fans at Sea cruises. Since 2021, The Golden Gays have been traveling internationally and attending conventions and Pride celebrations.
“The Golden Gays always make me laugh,” says Marsha Posner Williams, the producer of the original Golden Girls television show. “Their ability to improv is extraordinary, which means you never know what’s going to come out of their mouths, even if you see their shows multiple times! They are a fabulously funny troupe that lovingly connects you to your favorite foursome!”
Relive the magic, and catch up with the fabulous ladies of Richmond Street with The Golden Gays present Thank YULE for Being a Friend, just in time for the holidays. Tickets are $30 and are now on sale through the Lensic Performing Arts Center box office, or by visiting the website.
