Volker Engel

Volker Engel is an Oscar®-winning Visual Effects Supervisor and a Producer.

Volker is best-known for winning an Academy Award for the ground-breaking visual effects for the blockbuster “Independence Day”. He is currently working with Roland Emmerich on “Independence Day 2” as Co-Producer and Visual Effects Supervisor.

In 1989 Volker graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where he studied animation. He also studied for 2 semesters at the Filmakademie Baden Württemberg, where he then became a teacher for traditional animation techniques.

He started his film career in Germany in 1988 as Visual Effects Supervisor for Emmerich's Moon 44. Emmerich hired him again in 1995 to supervise the visual effects for Independence Day. Volker's work earned him an Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1997. He then went on to lead the VFX team for Emmerich's production of Godzilla.

In 1999, he co-founded the production company Uncharted Territory in Los Angeles with Marc Weigert to develop and produce feature films. The first of these independent projects was an adventure movie titled Coronado. He and Marc also co-produced the four-hour miniseries Dark Kingdom - The Dragon King and the six-hour Sci-Fi Channel miniseries The Triangle together with Bryan Singer and Dean Devlin.

Volker was Co-Producer and VFX Supervisor (with Marc Weigert) for White House Down and the disaster epic 2012, and he was Executive Producer and VFX Supervisor for the period drama Anonymous, all directed by Roland Emmerich.

In 1998 Volker received the highest honor for a citizen of his home country, the Order of Merit by German President Roman Herzog. He has also been given the title of Professor by his home state in Germany and teaches Film and Media Production whenever his schedule allows.

He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the British Academy for Film and Television Arts and the Producer's Guild of America. He also has served for three terms as a member of the board of directors and is a member of the Visual Effects Society.
